A New Year of Opportunity by Markus and Bambi Huyssen
Posted on February 23, 2008 As last year unfolded, there was a lot of uncertainty in our lives and ministry. It almost seemed like we hit the end of our rope. But God, indeed, had a different plan. A word was given to us, that this year 2008 will be a YEAR OF OPPORTUNITY. Indeed doors have closed on us, but new doors have opened as well. God has assured us that this year will be better than before.
As this year 2008 began, ministry opportunities already began coming in, but prayerfully we asked God for wisdom. Our first trip this year was to Korea for a family seminar. We were grateful for this opportunity because this is the kind of ministry that God has laid upon our hearts as a couple and family to be able to share God’s wonderful plan, and His original design for the family. Even though we come from different cultures and minister to different cultures we have discovered that no matter where you come from and what culture you have, there is only one design that God intended for family to have and to fulfill.
Ministering to Korean people and their families was challenging and rewarding. Korean’s are very passionate about God, they are known for that throughout the world. But that quality does not extend to their families. Actually, that may also be true for many of us as well. We shared with them what God’s word says about having proper priorities in the family, and that this it is even more important than what we can do for God (1 Tim. 3:4-5). This concept was revolutionary since most of them thought that church and prayer are more important than family, and many actually have been neglecting their husbands and wives and children for the sake of the church and “for God,” to the detriment of their families.
It was even more amazing to see their reactions towards our teaching on how to re-kindle the passion between husband and wife. Again, passion is something that they have strongly for God, but not for their spouse, in their wedding services they do not even kiss the bride! Our reward was seeing them come alive again and really learning to value their family and putting things in the proper order as God teaches us in His Word. They began to value people and things differently. We saw husband holding their wife’s hand and even embrace one another in public, and in some cases for the first time. People who lost the desire to have families began to have a desire for it. It was an awesome time of ministry! Glory to God!
