Reality Check - by Toby Huyssen

I don’t think we realize how blessed we are. I know that we all have our struggles, problems, and things we need to rely on God for. Do we realize that He has already given us so much. A friend and I visited a poor community in the Philippines. We were able to visit people in there houses. The house that my friend and I went into was 6 ft. by 8 ft. Most kids in the U.S. have better tree houses than this. A family of four owns the house: a mother, father, son, and daughter. Just to get to this house we had to go through a small alley that was almost too small for me to pass through. At all times I had to be crouched over because people had build houses above the walk way making it seem like we were walking through a cave. Then we had to climb a later to get into the house that we were visiting. We sat and talked with the family for a while. They had lived there four about five years, barely surviving. The mother couldn’t work because of health reasons. The father worked as a night watchman, but could barely make enough money to make ends meet. They came to Manila from their province area in order to find a job and live a happy life, but unemployment and poverty met them instead. On top of all this they are about to lose thier home. The government is working on a construction project of a nearby creak and 200 families will lose what they call home. Is it possible that we take what we have for granted: the food we eat, the houses we live in, the cars and entertainment that we enjoy? Do we ever stop to thank God for what we have? I know these families are just thankful to be alive one more day.
